Change Is Hard

…but change is certain.

Foggy reflections

We are careening toward the end of the year, no stopping it, can’t even slow it down. People are crazily trying to get everything done in time, working toward their perfect holiday. Stores are open 24 hours and many folks are losing sleep. Cooking themselves into a stupor. Exhausted.

Me? Not so much. The few gifts I needed to send are sent. The cards were in the mail last week. I think I’m done.

I wonder if I’m missing something by avoiding the stores and malls. Avoiding the frenzy. I guess I could go shopping for nothing in particular just to experience the ‘holiday joy,’ listen to the music, look at decorations. People watch.

But I don’t think so.

I’m participating in a challenge with some of my runner women friends. We have committed to walking or running at least one mile every day, starting Thanksgiving Day and ending New Years Day. So far I haven’t broken the streak and I find I like being outside a bit every day.

We had a streak of foggy mornings recently. It’s been unseasonably warm here, with only one snowstorm now long since gone. It’s peaceful to walk in the fog.

So my gift to you this holiday season is a reminder to take a bit of time off from the craziness that is your life and take a little walk. It doesn’t have to be long. It doesn’t have to actually go anywhere. Just get yourself outside and breath, a little bit every day, between now and the New Year.

And have a wonderful holiday with your families.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. I am not a “store” person either and this year we had to cut back big time on gifts…actually, we aren’t exchanging any gifts in the family at all this year. Wishing you a wonderful holiday and warm wishes for a kind and gentler New Year for all of us

    • We haven’t really exchanged gifts in a long time. Some years I just put together small things and ship them off to my family. Some years I don’t. Usually depends on how much time I have…or if I am inspired.

  2. I love your foggy images, and that you are out walking every day. It makes me feel like I have some company. 🙂
I’m not quite finished with the holiday brouhaha, but the things I have left to do can be done from home. I’m keeping things simple this year, making gifts instead of going out to buy them, although with the granddaughters, there will have to be a few store-bought items because I like to get at least one thing from their wishlist.

  4. A lovely post, Dawn. I’ve avoided the malls for the most part, too, and have been shopping for things for Christmas at places close to work or home. No dashing around. It makes for a calmer time, that’s for sure.

  5. It at least has been a great start to winter – rather mild all things considered – let just hope it doesn’t turn crazy

  6. I dislike shopping at the best of times. Holiday shopping makes me very uncomfortable…even with the cheery music and pretty decorations. I love shopping locally. My little home town is very festive and much quieter than the nearest shopping mall.
I love foggy mornings…you have captured them beautifully!

All the best on this last week before Christmas! 🙂 Connie

  7. We have avoided all the holiday craziness, too. I’ve done some baking just recently, but nothing that has made me too stressed. (Okay, a little last night when the darn caramel would not stop crystallizing!)
Love your foggy mornings. You’re right about how peaceful they are. That fog is like a blanket 🙂

  8. I’ll be so glad when this week is over. December is always the worst month for teaching, at least in a high poverty school district. The pressure to be joyous while knowing you won’t be having that tv commercial christmas is tough for these kids and does nothing but create behavior problems. I’ve been bringing my students little treats everyday, hoping to alleviate some of that tension, but its tough.

Took a peaceful walk with the dogs this morning. We may get our first dusting of snow tonight…kind of excited about it. Would be nice to walk in some fresh snow in the morning.

    • So are you off now for the rest of the year? Or do you have to get through part of next week too? I wonder if my sister is off now. I hope so! Your work is exhausting! Have a great Christmas Sara and family!

  9. This is a lovely post Dawn. I find myself in the middle ground somewhere on the holiday madness. I do go out and shop the malls but I’m not in a frenzy for anything particular, and I know my house, home and holiday will be far from perfect – and that’s totally okay. You are the second person recently inspiring me to want to get outside more often and enjoy this mild weather while we have it. I promise to give it a shot if mama nature allows once I am out of school for holiday break!

  10. Thank you for the lovely gift, Dawn! I, too, am pretty much DONE with all the hoopla and am enjoying the feeling of peace. Others may mill around like chickens with their heads cut off, but I prefer this aura of calm. Merry Christmas to you and yours!
