I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. I never thought to feed oranges, thanks for the idea. What a beautiful medley of birds.

    • Oriols like the same food as hummingbirds…I use the same ratio of sugar to water, and they like oranges, and apparently they love grape jelly.

  3. I hope everybody clicks on these photos to make them bigger, because they are really cool!

Love the one with the bird doing acrobatics:)

    • The oriole feeder has these big wide holes covered with removable rubber tops with slits…and the female kept pushing the tops off and ducking her whole head in the openings to get to the food. Silly girl…so instead of sitting nicely on the rail around the edge, she’s hanging upside down from the pole and drinking.

    • I know. We’re so lucky to see them for this long. Usually we catch one or two glimpses of the male at the feeder on one day and that’s it.

  7. What beautiful photos — I didn’t know birds would eat oranges. Thanks for the suggestion (feed is pretty expensive this year!)

  8. It’s such a treat when these flying beauties stop to allow us to enjoy their colors.

    • They seem to be happy, except Katie makes them nervous. They’re not used to a dog face so close to the window watching them yet. Later in the season the hummingbirds will buzz both Katie and me if the feeder is empty. They’re realy brave little ones.

  12. My mom was talking a lot about seeing a baltimore oriole at their hummingbird feeder this year. They put up an orange and the oriole loved that. I love the colors of this bird. We rarely see them in the woods.
