Change Is Hard

Weekly Photo Challenge: Juxtaposition

This week amid record snowfall, wind and excruciating cold I have been wistful for warmth.  I’ve been dreaming of Florida beaches, remembering the smell of orange blossoms, longing for the feel of sun on my shoulders, and squinting up into reeling snowflakes to look for any sign of our own, long missing, sun overhead.  So when I saw this week’s photo challenge, juxtaposition, I immediately connected the heat of a Florida orchard with the snow blowing past my window.

And came up with this:

cuties fixed

It’s still snowing today.  What was once beautiful is now viewed as something to get through.  I know spring is not that far away…but from where I sit right now it feels like an interminable, never ending struggle.

I look forward to checking out other photographers’ version of juxtaposition.  You could have all sorts of fun with this topic.  It should be a great diversion from focusing on the weather.  Give it a try!  You have till next Friday to post your own juxtaposition composition.  If you click on any of the links in this paragraph you’ll see a few of my favorites from this week.

I hope you go out and find something that shouts juxtaposition to you, I can’t wait to see it!

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  2. I think, given the winter you have been having, spring needs to come a little more quickly.

  3. It;’s too bad oranges can’t grow in the snow! What a beautiful contrast they make.

Coincidentally, as I drove down main street today, I noticed the newly refaced ambulance station. It was all shiny and new, and the house sitting next to it has a roof covered in a blue tarp, waiting to be fixed. Then there’s the original firehouse, cute and quaint, sitting right next door to the 1970’s version of a fire house, will a newer version be erected to its right?

I didn’t take a photo, but someone else did!

  7. Mommy NEVER buys oranges. She says smelling oranges gives her headaches. We think our Mommy is just wierd! I guess its a good thing we dont live in Florida. In any case. We Like your sense of humor putting the oranges in the snow. Maybe thats how they make orange flavored water ice.

  11. That is the coolest juxtaposition, Dawn! Love it. I didn’t see the photo challenge, but yesterday pondered putting something colorful outside in the snow and photographing it. Will keep this idea in the back of my mind. (What else do we have to work with besides snow, right?)

  12. Glad you had fun with this one Dawn 🙂 I’ve been considering it, but we’ll see if I get around to it come Friday.
Perhaps an orange slushie will help get you through another day or so of cold. Never mind. Make that a hot orange tea 😉

  13. I hope the snow goes away for you soon Dawn. It fun for a little while, but if just gets too bad! We has so much rain and wind right now it feels like it will never stop and each time we get a storm we lose a bit more of our coast. 😦 Mum be very grumpy about it. Also our internet keeps going off! Stupid weather!
